The PSAT is an introductory version of the SAT.

Shorter and less difficult than the SAT, but a great introduction to testing.

PSAT 1

Sections

Reading

47 questions - 60 mins

Consists of 5 reading comprehension passages with a variable amount of questions. Notorious for having Evidence Based Questions, which require you to go back and find evidence for your reading answers.

The best way to prepare for this section is develop for process for those evidence questions and learning to deal with the manipulation of the questions.

Writing

44 questions - 35 mins

Majority of this section is basic grammar, including punctuation and verb tense, and the remaining questions are rhetorical skills questions mostly about logic and syntax. Very similar to the SAT Writing.

The best way to prepare for this section is to review grammar rules and build an understanding of the question types. Many don't pay attention to the context and struggle with the logic questions.

Math (No Calc)

17 questions - 25 mins

Consists of one group of 13 multiple choice questions and 4 grid in questions. Heavy amount of variable and algebra based questions, but less math concepts than the SAT Math.

The best way to prepare for this section is to review math fundamentals and learn to recognize when to use certain strategies and methods.

Math (Calc)

31 questions - 45 mins

Consists of one group of 27 multiple choice questions and 5 grid in questions. Calculator is permitted, which means intense calculations, but not as intense as the SAT Math.

The best way to prepare for this section is to review math fundamentals and learn to recognize when to use certain strategies and methods. Important to focus on easy questions and make sure you avoid careless errors.
